Merrigong Theatre Company Presents Druid Ireland's

The Walworth Farce

A ferocious comedy from this great Irish theatre company.

10 Mar – 13 Mar

Continuing our recently acquired reputation for bringing you some of the world’s great theatre companies, Merrigong presents this acclaimed, hilarious black comedy from Ireland’s legendary Druid Theatre.

It’s 11 o’clock in the morning in a council flat on London’s Walworth Road. In two hours time, as is normal, three Irishmen will have consumed six cans of ale, fifteen crackers with spreadable cheese, ten pink biscuit wafers and one oven-cooked chicken with a strange blue sauce. In two hours time, as is normal, five people will have been killed. The Walworth Farce is a tender insight into what happens when we become stuck in the stories we tell ourselves about our lives.

This exhilarating farce has wowed festival audiences around the world and shot playwright Enda Walsh to international fame, earning him a growing reputation as one of Ireland’s great playwrights.

IPAC AUDIENCE REVIEWS

"It was brilliant. Probably one of the most extraordinary pieces of theatre I've ever seen - I just found it worked at so many levels.

Apologies in advance, as I'm sure you get tonnes in your inbox, but I had to write this "review!"

I arrived a few mins late (tag-teaming kids at the door) so waited eagerly through the 6-min lock out at the start and - having missed the all-important preparation by the characters for the performance of 'The Story' - I walked in to what was, at first, almost incomprehensible machine gun fire shouting from Dinny. Feeling on the last leg of a long day, I wondered if I'd survive.

But then, suddenly, as the total but logical madness of Dinny, Blake and Sean's ritual began to unfold (or unravel) I was riveted. Rather than feeling blown apart by rapid fire text, I felt exhilarated and glued to my seat - feeling horribly certain, like the rest of the audience, that Dinny and his boys were headed for hell. What hell that might, which could possibly be worse than the one they were living, who knew, but we were definatley going there. All of us.

I sat in the front row after interval and was just blown away by the performance up close. Each of the characters had his own sadness / emotional exhaustion going on, which was so moving and truthful to watch. This contrast with the frenetic vaudeville physical performance of Dinny's Story characters made Blake, Sean and Dinny unbearably vulnerable and human.

And of course I loved the precision and articulate physicality of the actors - it was so sharp.

I loved the whole thing.

Telling everyone to go!"
