RUFF! New Works in Progress

New work in development.

07 Aug – 14 Aug

Launched in 2008, RUFF! is an initiative of Merrigong Theatre Company’s Development Program and showcases new work in development. Audiences are encouraged to be part of the process of developing work for future Merrigong seasons by providing feedback after each reading.

RUFF! 1

The Table of Knowledge

A new work from version 1.0 and Merrigong Theatre Company.

In 2009, Merrigong approached Sydney-based contemporary performance company, version 1.0 to co-produce with us a work which investigates the Independent Commission Against Corruption’s 2007 enquiry into allegations of corruption amongst local property developers and staff of Wollongong City Council. The enquiry ultimately led to the sacking of the elected Council, but also uncovered sexual scandal, envelopes full of cash, and a regular meeting of a group of powerful local men at a kebab shop’s plastic table, described by them as “The Table of Knowledge”. This will be the first public showing of a work which promises to be an entertaining and informative exploration of power, corruption and good governance, sure to resonate far beyond Wollongong.

RUFF! 2

Empire of Soap

A new play by David Sharpe.

Will’s coming home for his father’s funeral. His father wasn’t just anyone.  He was Scruffy Adlington: soap magnate, self-made man and national icon.  But Will doesn’t see it like that and what better place to expose the truth than at Scruffy’s funeral?  But the empire of soap is hiding a wealth of dirty secrets and the truth turns out to be a lot more complicated than Will bargained for. Local playwright David Sharpe submitted his new script for support through the Theatre Development Program in 2008 and it was developed in 2009/10 with the assistance of dramaturg Joshua Lobb.
